The Beginner's Guide to Creating a Home Practice

Yoga has numerous health benefits – it helps you to destress, nurtures your soul and is good for the body. So why are you putting it off? While, there is truly something special about attending a group yoga class, you can also easily get started with your own home yoga routine. Yoga at home is convenient and inexpensive (dare I say, free?). So it’s time to cut the excuses and give it a try!

Find a Flow

New to yoga and not sure where to start? No worries! First, take a look at the YogaClub YouTube channel, featuring some great yoga routines and resources from our Tribe Leaders. These videos are suitable for both newbies and advanced yogis who are looking for a new yoga flow for the day. Best of all – it’s free! All you need is an Internet connection and your body to let go of any stress you’re holding and revitalize your soul.

I know it can be intimidating, especially when you first to get started. You might not be flexible or able to bend in those tricky positions you see in the videos.  The truth is, yoga has nothing to do with flexibility. You are in no competition with anyone. Yoga is for you, and you alone. However, trying yoga at home first might just give you the confidence boost that you need to sign up for a class!

Create Your Space

Now that you know where to find a yoga flow that works for you, it’s time to choose a comfortable and quiet space to practice. I have a smaller living space so I like to clear out my living room and place my mat on my fluffy shag carpet. If you’re going to practice yoga at home daily, you might want to create a more permanent space. Find what works for you, keeping in mind a clean, clutter free and well-ventilated space will work best.

Set the Mood

After you’ve found the space, it’s time to set the mood. I have a bit of a love affair with my yoga mat, so take the time to choose a beautiful quality mat that you feel good on. Wear comfy yoga gear that is both breathable and easy to move in. Even though you’re working at home and you are your only audience, I like to look as good as I feel during my practice (thank you YogaClub!).  Keep the lighting subtle – bright enough to see but dim enough to set a calm mood. I like to turn the lights off and have a few candles lit around the room. For a really relaxing experience, consider adding essential oils to the room through a diffuser. This is your space to arrive in the moment and nurture your body and mind.

Consistency is Key

I believe the most important part of creating a yoga practice at home is to just be consistent. It can be difficult to pull yourself off the couch and onto the mat, particularly if you aren’t required to leave the house. Remember why you need yoga in your life and how you feel after you practice. Make it an important part of your day – write it down in your schedule if you need to. If you’re having a particularly busy day, remember,  all you need is 20 minutes. You deserve it.
